The second public rehearsal for the DUO Project was held at Nakameguro GT Plaza Hall on Friday, November 2023, 11.
The first half of the concert featured the first movement of Brahms' "Sonata No. 2023 for Piano and Violin" performed by DUO Artist 2's Gen Shirase (piano) and Kyoko Takezawa (violin), and the second half featured the second movement of Saint-Saens' "Sonata No. 2023 for Piano and Violin" performed by DUO Artist 1's Gen Shirase (piano) and Nao Mizukoshi (violin).
In Brahms, the three coaches each gave lively instruction, mainly on how to weave phrases and how to move the music forward. Mr. Ueda, who is usually inspired by the playing of string instruments, was impressive in his instruction, explaining how "on the piano, the sound tends to come out directly," by saying, "Be aware of the bow's return," and "Use one bow here."
We also learned some unexpected tips from Professor Ueda on how to play in a more relaxed manner: "When your mouth is open, your body relaxes and a better sound is produced."
Even during the break, the three coaches gathered around the piano and continued to provide enthusiastic instruction.
After the break, the group took up the second movement of the Saint-Saëns piece, which Professor Takezawa said was "difficult to play suddenly." Professor Takezawa gave advice on how to express the "graininess" of the fine sounds of the violin, while Professor Ueda gave advice on the use of piano pedals and inner voices. It was a busy time, with many pieces of instruction on performance techniques being given back and forth.
Professor Oyama also asked, "What is your image of the Cantabile part? If you were to compare it to a dish?In response to the question, MizukoshiWhen he answered "Vichyssoise," everyone was surprised and relaxed. Regarding how he expands his imagination, Professor Takezawa shared his daily approach as a performer, saying, "Even when I'm not playing, for example, while traveling on the train, I expand my imagination while looking at the scenery," and "I have an image in mind, and then I create it through trial and error to see how to play it."
We will briefly introduce the impressions shared by the participants during the dialogue session.
Gen Shirase (piano)
I think the relationship and atmosphere when we're together when we're not playing music influences the music. I've been doing the DUO project since spring, and with one week left, I think my personal challenge is to take another step from being rigid to being flexible.
Nao Mizukoshi (violin)
Since the spring, I have been receiving coaching on many fronts, including technical aspects, knowledge, and how to expand my imagination. I am slowly beginning to get a better grasp of the image.
I want to make the most of what I've learned today and perform to the best of my ability during the actual performance.
